Count On Carla

Carla S. Sigler is an experienced attorney, litigator, prosecutor, and Magistrate Judge, with more than 25 years of legal experience.  She has  a lifelong commitment to serving the people of Southwest Louisiana. Born in Welsh, raised in Moss Bluff, and spending countless weekends in Sulphur, Louisiana, where her father, stepmother, and cousins on two sides of her family lived, Carla graduated from Sam Houston High School before earning a full academic scholarship to McNeese State University, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She later earned her Juris Doctor from Paul M. Hebert Law Center, graduating in the top 24% of her class and receiving CALI Awards in Constitutional Law II and Bankruptcy for the top grades in the class.


Following law school, Carla began her legal career as a judicial law clerk in the 4th Judicial District Court in Monroe and Bastrop, Louisiana, working for two respected judges, former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Marcus Clark, who was from Sulphur, Louisiana, and the Honorable Carl Van Sharp. She then served for 17 years as an Assistant District Attorney in Calcasieu Parish as a top attorney, including as its Appellate Section Chief, where she prosecuting cases ranging from misdemeanors to capital murder.


Carla worked as an Assistant District Attorney for former Calcasieu Parish District Attorneys Rick Bryant and John F. DeRosier on numerous high-profile cases, and she was also appointed as a Special Prosecutor in both Rapides and Jefferson Davis Parishes. During Carla’s tenure as an Assistant District Attorney, she served as the original drafter of numerous Louisiana laws that are still in effect today. 


Carla is an experienced Public Records Custodian, serving that role for over a decade at the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office.  She helped ensure “open file” discovery was adopted by the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office, and she is committed to government transparency and accessibility for all.


A recognized leader in innovative justice programs, Carla helped establish the 14th Judicial District Court Adult Drug Court, DWI Treatment Court, and Veterans Treatment Court programs, and for years she served as Coordinator and the Lead Prosecutor for all three initiatives. She also assisted in drafting Louisiana’s Veterans Court Treatment statute, and she secured and managed over $1 million in grant funding for rehabilitation-focused court programs.


With John DeRosier, Carla helped bring the “Fresh Start” Expungement Program to Calcasieu Parish, the same program now known as the “New Day” Program which helps expunge arrest and conviction records for certain non-violent offenders.  Carla also represented the State of Louisiana in hundreds of published appellate decisions, and successfully argued before the Supreme Court of the United States in Jonathan Boyer v. Louisiana, helping prevent a confessed murderer from going free.


Carla settled in Sulphur, Louisiana, where she has lived for the last seventeen (17) years, minutes away from her Sulphur family members.  She lives with her husband, Brent Collins, a Navy veteran who served as a submariner before working for years in the oil field and in plant operations and maintenance.  Carla has a stepson who lives in another state, and she and Brent have two fur babies, their rescue dogs Maggie and Maverick.


Carla and Brent attend Immaculate Conception Church in Sulphur, Louisiana, where Carla teaches sixth grade Prep/CCD classes.  Carla was blessed to attend an ACTS Retreat in May of 2025, and she also attends a Ladies’ Bible Study at Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in Sulphur, Louisiana. 


Carla has extensive courtroom and judicial experience. Since 2021, she has served as the appointed Vinton Mayor’s Court Magistrate Judge, presiding over misdemeanor criminal matters, traffic cases, and a civil blight docket. In private practice, she represents both individual and government clients in criminal law, family law, estate planning, successions, business litigation, landlord-tenant disputes, evictions, and other civil matters. She is licensed to practice law in both Louisiana and Texas, as well as in multiple federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court.


Carla has also spent her career helping to train law enforcement officers, lawyers, and judges, serving as an Instructor at various conferences.  She previously served as an Instructor at the Calcasieu Parish Regional Law Enforcement Academy, training law enforcement officers throughout the region. 


Throughout her distinguished career, Carla has been honored for her service and leadership, including being recognized as the 2026 City of Sulphur Woman of the Year. Carla and Brent are founding members of the CalCam Sunset Rotary Club.


In 2020, Carla founded  SWLA Disaster Recovery Clinic,  which gathered attorneys together to dispense free legal advice to those in need after Hurricanes Laura and Delta devastated this area.  She remains committed to serving the community with fairness, integrity, compassion, and sound judgment.


Carla Sigler’s experience as an attorney and community leader has prepared her to serve the citizens of Sulphur, Westlake, and Carlyss as a dedicated, knowledgeable,  and fair Sulphur City Court Judge.
